The Old Course — Golf's Cathedral
The most famous golf course in the world. The first and 18th fairways run through the center of town. To play it as a visitor, enter the daily ballot at the Links Trust website (open from the day before your desired tee time). If you don't get a ballot slot, standby is available from 2pm. You can also line up overnight and wait until they open to get the available slots on the tee sheet. Get there no later than 2am. It's easier to get out on their other courses. Give Castle Course, New Course, and Jubilee a shot. You won't be disappointed. Alternatively, walking the Old Course on Sundays (when it's closed to play) is free — walk out on the 18th, stand on the Swilcan Bridge, and let the history of the place sink in.
St Andrews Cathedral Ruins
Once the largest cathedral in Scotland — now dramatic ruins rising from a clifftop above the North Sea. Free to explore. The haunting roofless nave and the intact entrance tower make for extraordinary photography. The attached cemetery contains fascinating Victorian monuments.
West Sands Beach
The wide windswept beach north of the town — the opening sequence of Chariots of Fire was filmed here. An excellent long walk with views back to the cathedral ruins and the town. The North Sea is bracing even in summer — not for swimming, but spectacular for a walk in any weather.
The University and Town Character
St Andrews is Scotland's oldest university (1413) and the town has a distinctly academic character — gown-wearing students, ancient quadrangles, cobblestone streets, and a medieval layout that makes wandering genuinely rewarding. The main shopping street (South Street) has good independent cafes.
