🏛️Must-Do

Zona Colonial (Colonial Zone)

The oldest European settlement in the Americas and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walking the cobblestoned streets — past 16th-century churches, fortresses, and colonial mansions — is unlike anywhere else in the Caribbean. Allow a full day.

🦇Day Trip

Cueva de las Maravillas (Cave of Wonders)

An extraordinary cave system featuring Taíno rock art and dramatic stalactite formations, about 1.5 hours east of Santo Domingo near La Romana. Well-organized guided tours. One of the most underrated attractions on the island.

Landmark

Catedral Primada de América

The oldest cathedral in the Americas, completed in 1541. The interior is more restrained than many European cathedrals, but its historical significance is enormous. Free to enter during non-service hours.

🍽️Food

Dining in the Colonial Zone

The Zona Colonial has a solid concentration of restaurants. Walking the streets and choosing somewhere that looks busy with locals is always a good strategy.
