Northern Pacific Beaches
The Guanacaste coast near Liberia has some of Costa Rica's most accessible and beautiful beaches. Playa Tamarindo is the most developed — a lively surf town with good restaurants, nightlife, and reliable waves. Playa Conchal is famed for its crushed-shell sand and brilliant water clarity. Playa Flamingo and Playa Brasilito are calmer alternatives. Playa Hermosa (near Liberia) is a quiet, dark-sand beach popular with local families. The advantage of the north: driving time from the beach to the volcano parks is dramatically shorter than from San José.
Parque Nacional Volcán Tenorio & Rio Celeste
Tenorio Volcano National Park contains the extraordinary Rio Celeste — a river that glows a vivid turquoise blue caused by a volcanic mineral reaction where two rivers merge. Inside the park you'll also find La Laguna Azul, a striking crater lake of the same brilliant color. From Liberia, Tenorio is approximately 1.5–2 hours by car. Critical timing tip: The colors are most vivid during the dry season (December through April). In February the blues are strikingly beautiful; by June they become significantly diluted and far less impressive. Bring waterproof shoes regardless of season — the trails can be muddy.
Africa Mia Wildlife Reserve
An unusual and genuinely enjoyable wildlife park near Liberia where African savanna animals — giraffes, zebras, ostriches, wildebeest, and more — roam in large open enclosures on the Guanacaste plains. The semi-arid landscape of Guanacaste actually resembles African savanna more than the rest of Costa Rica, making the experience feel surprisingly authentic. Tours are guided (usually by jeep or tractor-trailer) and allow close-up animal encounters. Located about 20 minutes from Liberia airport — a great add-on stop on arrival or departure day.
Rincón de la Vieja Volcano
The most accessible active volcano from Liberia — about an hour by car — with a national park containing boiling mud pots, fumaroles, waterfalls, and jungle trails. The Las Pailas loop trail (2–3 hours) is the most popular and passes volcanic features up close. The Cangreja Waterfall trail leads to a stunning turquoise pool perfect for swimming. Four-wheel drive recommended for the less-maintained Santa María entrance.
